In 2006, the State of Hawaii Department of Transportation-Airport Division (DOT-A) launched the state’s first Public Access to Defibrillation (PAD) AED Program, Operation Stay’N Alive. The success of the AED Program has been more than was ever anticipated. Within the first six months of the PAD Program, the survival rate escalated from the national average of 1-5% to an 84% survival rate.
With continued training and the rapid response of airport employees and bystanders and the easily accessible AEDs, dozens of lives have been saved. The DOT-A PAD Program incorporates over 150 AEDs installed in thirteen airports on six islands. Thousands of employees and airport users have been trained in life-saving skills of CPR and how to use the AEDs.
